Unfortunately, looks like they choose to start using Electron in Linux and Windows so probably here too.[1][2]

I downloaded and tried the demo and it is one of the better Electron apps I've used even in beta. It's performant and the new UI is pretty nice. Watchtower especially is nicely integrated.

We are indeed using Electron for some elements of the app, but we’re strongly focused on delivering performance as a feature. Using Rust for the heavy lifting has enabled us to do that. Additionally one of the early concerns raised with Electron was that we might lose some of the tight integration with the OS that people have come to love and expect. We made sure that didn’t happen. Thanks for trying it out. I’m glad to hear it works well for you. - Ben, 1Password

Can you comment on the loss of iCloud syncing? That is going to be the reason I leave if it's confirmed.

Standalone vaults (including 3rd party sync) will not be part of 1Password 8. You can read more about this here: https://1password.community/discussion/comment/602340/#Comme...

OK, that's it, I'm going to give Outercorner's Secrets a try - I've been meaning to do that anyway, since I trust iCloud syncing much more than a third party, and don't want to get locked in to using a sub-standard non-native application on my desktop just because your market strategy relies on holding my data hostage while removing key platform features between versions.

(full disclosure: I also know the developer personally and have watched as he evolved the product, and since it has comprehensive import/export features I know I can get my data in and out of it safely - and without being beholden to a subscription that adds effectively zero value)

It's a shame, really, I've been using 1Password forever and have kept at version 6 precisely because I want to limit my data exposure and have a bloat-free experience.

Goodbye, and thank you for all the fish.

I'm happy to keep up-to-date with 1Password and, for the little improvements they bring, I buy new versions when they come out—but am I right in thinking that they're getting rid of standalone vaults in this latest one? If true, that's disappointing.

From using the Early Access version, is anyone able to confirm this? I remember there being some brouhaha when version 7 was rumoured to be dropping them, and that turned out not to be true.

Ok, skimming the thread on their forum about a possible self-hosted option seems to confirm it. I don't want that fuss. I just want to be able to open my vaults. Syncing with iCloud never was a problem, so their vault-hosting service never made sense, in my case.

Hi! I addressed this question here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28144189

Dang, but thanks. I'm going to assume that v8 will come out after Monterey, so we will probably get Monterey support in v7? Do you know if there's a date for when v7 is EOL? Thinking about security updates, mostly.

Timelines are still fairly opaque but v7 works with Monterey today.
