Interesting- so is the publisher saying they just publish whatever? The reddit discussion had some essentially ad-hominem arguments about the article, but the whole point of publishing in journals is the legitimacy and presumption of some kind of review, so normally one wouldn't need to care who wrote an article. If true, does this reduce to "The American Heart Society 'Circulation' Journal publishes research without vetting it"?
An alternative possibility is that the article is legit and has been subjected to scrutiny and passed, and the journal is editorializing because they don't like the findings. This doesn't appear to be the case here. Whichever is true, it doesn't bode well for the journal's credibility
