GitHub starts banning Russian accounts [Russian] (habr.com)

One Twitter answer stated that Gitlab was founded in Ukraine, and therefore he couldn't create a Gitlab account, move it over there.

no, the situation there is the same as with Github. Gitlab: "We condemn the actions of Russia's leadership, not the people who live there." https://about.gitlab.com/blog/2022/03/11/gitlab-actions-to-d...

only sanctioned companies are affected, not independent individuals. which is different to the Crimean sanctions.

Seeing what are the accounts mentioned (one of them is Sberbank, large Russian bank), it seems it's about not doing business with sanctioned companies (which Sberbank is one of).

I imagine a US company is obligated by US law to do that.

Indeed I may confirm the listed companies are sanctioned. Though I don't think there's been a major impact on the companies anyway, git repos are distributed so they still have copies.

Personally I'm concerned that the repos are just deleted instead of just suspending accounts and archiving repositories. Meaning it may impact other users. Moreover at least one personal [1] account has been suspended.
