Show HN: PaperTube – Turn YouTube Videos into Kindle-Ready Articles (papertube.site)

Would you prefer reading podcasts, TED talks, or conversations instead of watching/listening to videos? If so, you might find this interesting.

PaperTube lets you turn any YouTube video into an easy-to-read, well-formatted article with speaker names, and you can even get it on your Kindle. I've been working on this small project over the last week. Right now, it supports sending any video to Kindle. I'd love to hear if anyone is interested in this. Looking forward to your feedback and discussion! It's currently free because I have some free credits for the LLMs I'm using. I need to find a way to fund it. Some features I'm planning include subscribing to YouTube channels and getting daily or weekly articles on your Kindle, and maybe a browser extension to quickly convert any video.

The website got blocked by the SURBL list. Here's alternate link: papertube.live. All the kindle emails were based on user actions, not sure why the site got flaged. I have the SPF/DKIM setup as well.

UI flow for new videos is awkward (reading on mobile and not using kindle). I paste the YouTube url and then I'm supposed to wait and try again in a few minutes? give me a new page and have it just say "processing" until it's ready.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree the current web view flow is awkward; I'm working on fixing it. The mobile UI is a bit weird too, but it should be better on Kindle.

Is there any update to the workflow? Been trying to get a video transcribed, but am not getting the UI telling me the transcription is ready

It takes sometime to get the transciption ready. Can you share the which video did you try, I will check and get back.

You could use the YouTube captions instead of downloading the video and processing that to get text for a good number of videos that are just one person talking.

Good idea, thanks. I'm currently downloading all the videos, and this should help reduce costs. I can use the video description/title to determine if there's only one person speaking by using LLM.

Instead of downloading the video, another option is to get a low quality audio only track.

The open source ytdlp tool has some parameters to list all audio tracks and their quality, and you can make a choice from there.

To get the ebook on kindle, please add @papertube.site to your approved kindle email list. The previously provided address was incorrect, my bad.

Do I need to wait on the page for processing to complete or will it continue to process if I leave and come back?

You can leave and come back. The processing should get done in few minutes(<5 mins for 3 hours video).

This is awesome. Would prefer left aligned instead of justified but that's a nit-pick

Updated.

Much needed product. Thanks for sharing!!
