Some light searching reveals that around 60% of Americans are invested in the stock market. So 40% at least say they are not or possibly don't understand some of their retirement investments/pensions if they have them.
Point is that many people simply don't pay attention to it so I am not at all surprised if they are unaware of the increase so far this year. Also 12% isn't that amazing historically so unless it is really bad or great it will not register on most peoples radar.
