I disagree. First of all, probably 90% of developer jobs fall outside of the categories you mention (embedded and frontend development). Most of those roles don't involve knowing the difference between /shin and /bin lol

If you don’t deploy software to Linux, fine.

If you do and you say things like that, that’s willful ignorance; this is also fine if you don’t want to be promoted or hired by the best teams.

If you think I'm wrong, you can make your case without the weird "you'll never get anywhere in life, kid" tone.

I never said that and I also don't feel like trying to convince anyone to be curious about how their software actually works.

I stand by what I actually said: it's fine if you don't care about those things. I wouldn't hire you if you said that on my interview.

If I found out that you had such a narrow view of what it takes to be "curious about how their software actually works", I wouldn't hire you either.

My point was that these skills translate to the BSD's, mac, the cloud, android, desktop linux, etc... not to say that only two categories exist. I think even if you do frontend you would benefit from learning linux, but it was one of the larger examples of people who could eek by, by skipping it. It's also not that hard to do and brings a lot of benefits.
