Show HN: Kill SaaS with Open Source (kill-saas.com)

KillSaaS is my answer to subscription software in the AI era.

I'm building this because I believe small teams can use modern AI tools to create free alternatives to giants like Figma and DocuSign in weeks, not years.

We're creating a platform where developers vote on which SaaS to replace, then build it together as open source.

wdyt?

I think no-one wants to self-host, so you will end up having to make a service offering hosting for the open source projects you create, so you end up the same SaaS situation as before, but the code is open source. Great situation, but still not moving away from SaaS to self-hosted.

Why not?

You have to deal with a lot more complexity; contracts, cables, network, power, cooling, hardware purchases/failures, disk failures, RAID, routing, BGP, operating systems, databases etc. With the cloud you just outsource that to Amazon and they charge you for it.

That's ok for a rapid start. Later on, each and every company reaches a point where they are looking for a way to self-host. AWS bills tend to swell out of control.

Yes.

This is fantastic and this needs to happen.

Modern SaaS has gotten out of control and it needs to go to zero.

AI is already engaging in the race to zero, so why not get there faster with open source.

Zero is open source and the community 'kills' the SaaS and their competitors by building it together in the open for free.

Imagine if all SaaS companies were open source, no lock in, no hiking of prices, just sell maintenance and support for enterprises and those who cannot host it themselves and that's it.

Instead of an abundance of VC, YC AI SaaS slopware, an abundance of open source replacements would be better which renders these grifts unprofitable.

This is the techno optimistic world that we were promised.

Exactly, I believe there are already some good open-source alternatives to popular SaaS software but we need more.

And also purposefully targeting SaaS and making it open-source since they don't have a moat.

That's why I created this board/launchpad. It will be a challenge to grow, but let's see.
