Handy tip for software testing - Gmail ignores everything after a “+” in the address. So when you’re testing different accounts in your software you can use <youremail>+1@gmail.com, <youremail>+2@gmail.com, <youremail>+3@gmail.com etc. to create many different accounts in the software that all go to the same email address.

That's not just a Gmail feature. It's part of RFC 5233. See "Subaddressing."

Indeed, also works at outlook.com / hotmail and others.

Nor your eyes for some reason either.

Every health care plan I've had (US, New York specifically) has covered optometry, is that unusual?

Same for me. It's always an add-on but same provider and policy.

This has been true with multiple providers on the east and west coast.

Yes, but the point is it is an add-on. Administratively (and in terms of deductible, etc.) it is different from the medical plan.

Yes, in the US at least.

That line is Really fuzzy.

They don't generally cover normal vision needs. Your regular glasses and/or contacts aren't covered.

Eye injury or cancer, though? Usually covered. I honestly can't recall anyone getting denied for a possible scratch on the eye, either here in Norway or the US (Am from the US). Expenses for eye issues with MS or Diabetes? Usually covered. In these cases, you often go to a specialist MD instead of the normal eye doctor (if you see an MD at all). More is generally covered for eyes than teeth - if teeth were covered like eyes, it would be an improvement. A lot of acute care and infections and stuff would be covered.

As a glasses wearer, not covering glasses feels reasonable to me, although I can't quite put my finger on why.

I guess I see glasses at least partially as a fashion accessory--a necessary one for sure, but then so are shoes, and I don't expect those to be covered by insurance.

All the comments are missing the bigger picture with this new policy - Trump is sending a message the tech companies will need to pay up (to him) to get this policy to go away.

My guess is this administration will also use this as a leverage in any negotiation with India?

Possible. Trump is in trouble with MAGA over Epstein etc., so he puts out this proposal for a headline and will revert it under certain circumstances.

I was already surprised that he implements one of his campaign promises.

Tourism is one of the best “products” a country can produce. It’s almost all a service industry which doesn’t strain natural resources, doesn’t cause physical health issues for its employees, incentivizes a higher level of education, and brings in large amounts of foreign currencies, helping to stabilize their own currency. The positives FAR outweigh the negatives. Countries like Saudi Arabia have embraced tourism as a great way to diversify. A country like Thailand is able to “thrive” relative to its neighbors because it derives far more economic power from its tourist trade.(20% of GDP compared to Cambodia’s 9%, Malaysia’s 15% and Myanmar’s 3%)

whatever economic power it gets from tourism is used up on stuff like smartphones for the rich. Not food. Not resources. Their health clinic shelves were empty.

In effect, tourism just absorbs talented manpower. Thailand has a huge dearth of educated people doing world shattering stuff because so many went the tourist route. Sure it stops the other braindrain with ex-migration.

That’s absurd - the guy’s worth $130B, you think he cares about the not-even-pocket-change that would come from owning the land that a Twin Peaks is on? Dell’s RTO is purely a silent downsizing.

What if I told you we were both right?

Can Do Kwon bet enough money on “yes” to over his own roughly $30M bribe.

Im still waiting for the "will Fascist X die by 20Xx" market.

What?? Something’s off in your statement. Inflation is actually a good thing when it comes to buying a house. You buy a house, get a (fixed) mortgage, and make set payments for the next 30 years. However, the payment amount never changes so as inflation takes effect over the years, your “real” payment gets cheaper and cheaper. In my case, the $1500/month I started paying in 2011 was worth a lot more than $1500 is worth today.

Insurance doesn’t cover you when you drive outside your home country (USA).

You're right... Most companies no longer cover rentals outside of North America for US drivers.

That wasn't always the case and it's good to know.

This part of their business model, why would they get rid of it?! Seems particularly pervasive in Europe. I got burned twice, once in Germany and once in France (both with Hertz), where they “discovered” a tiny scratch on a door they are sure was not there when I rented it. They charge a massive repair fee AND a loss of use fee. Around $900 for each of them. And the most beautiful part…they get to repeat this with the next person who rents it as well.

I had this happen once with Avis in France. I actually did ding the side view mirror, and when I returned the van, I told them about the damage. Unfortunately when we picked up the van it already had two huge scratches running the whole length of the van, which I took pictures of, and so naturally they sent me an invoice for repainting the whole side of the van.

I tried with their customer service to work it out, but they just gave me the runaround, so I disputed the charge with my credit card and I never heard anything about it after that.

The question is, if you assume for just one moment that the rental firm is operating fairly… are you sure the scratch wasn’t there when you rented the car? I’ve never rented a car without the firm giving me a damage report to sign before I drive away, and giving me the opportunity to add anything missed. If I see the tiniest scratch, I add it to that form, photograph it and send them an email before I leave the lot. And I’ve never been scammed for damage that I didn’t cause myself.
